Common questions
Why do some states pay more even with higher taxes?
Medicare adjusts payment using Geographic Practice Cost Indices (GPCI). This is payment geography: what the same clinical basket collects. The table keeps that separate from BEA Regional Price Parities, which estimate what things cost.
Does this include cost of living (housing, food)?
It shows two views: raw after-tax take-home and a BEA RPP-adjusted take-home proxy. RPP is an aggregate price index, not your personal rent, school, or childcare budget.
Why is the tax calculation an estimate?
We use a simplified model assuming Married Filing Jointly (MFJ) with standard deductions and no pre-tax retirement contributions. Actual tax liability depends heavily on individual deductions, spouse income, property taxes, and local/city taxes which are not included here.
